April 9, 2024

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) has selected David Bindel, professor of computer science in the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, as one of its 2024 SIAM Fellows.

SIAM is an international community numbering more than 14,000 members that seeks to advance the development of applied mathematical and computational techniques to further science, engineering, industry, and society.

This year, SIAM is honoring 26 fellows in recognition of their service to the applied mathematics research community and their outstanding contributions to the field. Bindel was selected for his "contributions in numerical linear algebra and its innovative use in broad areas of computational science and engineering," according to SIAM

Previously, Bindel received the KDD Best Research Paper Award, the ASPLOS Most Influential Paper Award, the SIAM LA Best Paper Award, an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, and the Householder Award. He is also the recipient of the 2020 James and Mary Tien Excellence in Teaching Award.

Bindel is the director of the Center for Applied Math at Cornell and the Simons Collaboration on Hidden Symmetries and Fusion Energy. Bindel received his Ph.D. in computer science at the University of California, Berkeley in 2006 and his undergraduate degree in math and computer science from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1999
