CS Grad Student Organizing First Black in AI Workshop

CS PhD student Rediet Abebe is co-organizing the first Black in AI Workshop at the 31st annual Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS ‘17) taking place in Long Beach, CA on December 8. Rediet will join fellow co-chairs Sarah M. Brown (University of California, Berkeley), Mouhamadou Moustapha Cisse (Facebook AI Research), Timnit Gebru (Microsoft Research, NYC), and Sanmi Koyejo (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign).

The workshop aims to highlight work done by black researchers in AI, foster research collaborations and sharing of ideas, and provide a platform to discuss initiatives that will increase the presence of black researchers in the field. It grew out of a group under the same name that formed this past spring and has over 200 members from five continents, including several researchers from universities in Ethiopia, Zambia, and South Africa. Cornell CIS is providing funding for five Cornell undergraduates to attend the workshop.

The workshop will feature invited talks from senior black researchers in Artificial Intelligence, contributed talks, a poster session, and socials. Researchers of all races are invited to attend the workshop.
