ITHACA, N.Y. – Come explore the latest and greatest in video game design at Cornell next Friday, including the addition of many networked multiplayer games this year. Students in the Game Design Initiative program are eager to show off the culmination of their hard work at the Game Design Initiative Showcase 2017 on May 19 from 4-7 pm in Carpenter Hall. The event is free, open to the public and participants are urged to play the new games and vote for their favorite.
Some of this year’s projects include:
• Manic Moving Mansion– In this mobile game users protect a little girl that is wandering around a mysterious mansion by unscrambling rooms to guide her to safety. Student game developers are Andrew Jiang, Charisse Foo, Jiacong Xu, Kathryn Stinebruner, Nick Milner and Yichen Jia.
• Laser Penguins – A multiplayer shooter game, Laser Penguins uses the standard controls of mobile devices (accelerometer and touch) to create a fast-paced and fun game. Developed by Joel Hoover, Michael Henning, Mengjia Guo, Mauricio Moreyra, Max Rademacher, Nicole Pirringer and Reid Wade.
• Reduct – Reduct is a puzzle game for teaching core programming concepts developed by Ian Arawjo, Cheng-Yao Wang, and CIS professors Andrew Myers, Erik Andersen, and Francois Guimbretiere. Reduct introduces a novel teaching strategy in which programming language semantics are decopsed into a series of gamified micro-tasks. The game has been nominated as one of three finalists in the “Games with a Purpose” section of CHI 2017 Student Game Competition.
The Game Design Initiative at Cornell University is part of the Department of Computer Science and is led by Director Walker White, computer science professor and primary instructor for the game design courses.
