October 5, 2023

Sainyam Galhotra is an assistant professor of computer science in the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science. Previously, Galhotra was a Computing Innovation Postdoctoral Fellow at the Data Science Institute at the University of Chicago. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

What is your academic focus?

Databases, data science, responsible analytics, causal inference, and algorithms.

Could you briefly summarize your research?

My research aims to build tools to democratize access to data science. The objective is to enable even those without expert knowledge to make accurate, explainable, and equitable data-based decisions.

What are you most looking forward to as a Cornell faculty member?

I am looking forward to working with students, helping them learn about exciting things in data science, and imparting some of my enthusiasm for the subject. I hope not only to teach but to learn alongside them, drawing from their unique perspectives and insights.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

I really enjoy playing racquet sports, especially badminton and squash. I love nature, which makes Ithaca an ideal place for me. Occasionally, I go for hikes and walks with my dog.

Which courses are you most looking forward to teaching?

I am looking forward to teaching Data to Decisions: Principles of Efficient Data Science this semester. This course will teach the fundamentals of data management, starting from acquisition to analytics.
