Jimi He, MPS ’22, is a data scientist at Microsoft, where he develops and implements natural language processing (NLP) models used on Microsoft’s Bing Ads platform.
In spring 2022, as a student in Cornell’s master of professional studies (MPS) program in data science and applied statistics, He and his teammates won the Best Project Award with “Critical Risk Index for Space Weather” in the MPS Project course.
Why did you decide to pursue an MPS degree in data science and applied statistics at Cornell?
I chose the MPS in applied statistics at Cornell due to several factors. Firstly, its flexible elective courses. The program's customizable track allowed me to tailor my studies to specific areas of interest. Secondly, Cornell's reputation. Cornell's strong academic reputation and its renowned faculty in statistics were highly influential in my decision. Thirdly, the career-focused MPS project. The MPS project provided a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience and showcase my skills to potential employers.
What was your experience like in the MPS program, and what are some skills you developed?
The MPS program was intense but rewarding. I spent a significant amount of time on coursework and interview preparation. While the core courses were a review for me, they helped solidify my existing statistical knowledge. Elective courses like machine learning and NLP introduced new skills and deepened my understanding of data science techniques. Additionally, the program's emphasis on communication and collaboration through group discussions and career advising significantly improved my professional skills.
Can you tell us about your current job at Microsoft?
I currently work as a data scientist specializing in natural language generation at Microsoft's Bing Ads platform. My primary responsibility is to develop and implement NLP models that generate text ad copy based on landing page information. This involves tasks such as model experimentation, deployment, maintenance, and related analytics.
In what ways did the MPS prepare you for your current job?
The MPS program's coursework in NLP and machine learning was instrumental in preparing me for my current role. The skills I acquired in these areas were directly applicable to the technical challenges I encounter in my job. Additionally, the MPS project provided valuable hands-on experience and helped me build a strong resume. The career advising I received during the program was also invaluable in preparing me for the job search process and negotiation.
How did you first hear about the job you currently have? Did you see a job posting, attend a job fair, or make a connection with someone at Microsoft?
I discovered the job posting on Microsoft's official career website. I recommend that students actively monitor company websites and job boards for relevant opportunities.
What advice would you give to new and prospective students in the MPS program?
I advise new and prospective students to carefully consider their career goals and choose elective courses accordingly. Starting the job search early is crucial, and I highly recommend utilizing the resources available through career consulting and the Cornell alumni network.
