Informational Interviewing
What is Informational Interviewing?
Informational Interviewing is a piece of the networking process. It is a planned and prepared approach to gain career and job fit information.
Components Of An Effective Information Interview
Contact individual by email first using your elevator pitch. Ask for 15-20 minutes of their time either in person or by phone. Develop a predetermined list of 5-10 questions to ask about career path, advice, or other pertinent questions but NOT about a job opportunity. Do your homework to know something about him or her. If you meet in person remember to provide a firm handshake. Always send a thank you not. Use a tracking system or database. Follow up when appropriate.
Tip: Some of these questions are great conversation starters or for helping you figure out what to say over an interview dinner or lunch.
