Bindel Named CIS Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion

Below is a message from CIS Dean Kavita Bala that was sent to the CIS community on Friday, Dec. 4, 2020.

Dear CIS community,

I am delighted to announce that David Bindel, Associate Professor of Computer Science, will serve as the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion for CIS starting January 1, 2021 for a three-year term.

Prof. Bindel, currently serving as the Director of the Center for Applied Mathematics (CAM), has been recognized with multiple prestigious awards for his research in scientific computing. Among his honors, he has received the KDD Best Research Paper Award, the ASPLOS Most Influential Paper Award, the SIAM LA Best Paper award, the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, and the Householder Award. His teaching, which has also received multiple awards, includes courses on “Numerical Methods for Data Science,” “Matrix Computations,” and “Applications of Parallel Computers.” As a member of the CIS community, David has been leading initiatives to increase the recruitment and retention of diverse PhD students and to promote an inclusive climate for all students, starting with his 2017-18 efforts as CS PhD admissions chair

As we celebrate Prof. Bindel’s appointment, I also want to thank Prof. Hakim Weatherspoon, the outgoing interim Associate Dean. We are grateful for his many contributions in this role and to those initiatives he will continue to participate in, including SoNICCSMore, and Tapia. Prof. Weatherspoon will conclude his service as interim Associate Dean on December 31, 2020, after which he will be on sabbatical at his company, Exotanium.

Please join me in thanking Hakim and welcoming David as CIS’s next Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion.

Best,

KB
