Saito named Forbes 30 Under 30 Japan

November 9, 2022

Yuta Saito, a graduate student in the field of computer science, has been named to Forbes 30 under 30 Japan for his research in counterfactual learning – a field that lies at the intersection of machine learning and causal inference.

Saito, who won the award in the Technology & Science category, is advised by Thorsten Joachims, professor of computer science and information science in the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science. The two recently published “Fair Ranking as Fair Division: Impact-Based Individual Fairness in Ranking,” in the Proceedings of the 2022 Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (SIGKDD) Conference.

In 2020, Saito co-founded the startup "Hanjuku-Kaso” with Yusuke Narita, an assistant professor at Yale University, and is currently the head of science at the company, which helps other companies implement counterfactual learning in their applications.
